India’s para-shuttler Nithya Sre Sivan brings home the 15th medal for India at the Paris Paralympics. Nithya won the bronze medal in the women’s singles SH6 event in Paris. The shuttler from Tamil Nadu defeated Rina Marlina in straight sets, winning the match 2-0 (21-14, 21-6).
Dominating win for Nithya
Nithya surged to a 7-0 lead in the first game, but Marlina mounted a strong comeback to level the score at 10-10. Despite the challenge, Nithya regained her rhythm and won the game in just 13 minutes. She continued her dominant performance in the second game, quickly establishing a 10-2 lead, winning the game by 21-6 in the end.
First Paralympics medal for Nithya Sre
This is the first-ever medal for the shuttler in the Paralympics. Recently, she found success in the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where she won two bronze medals—one in the women’s doubles team and another in the women’s doubles event. Overall, this is her biggest achievement in a singles event.
Nithya’s journey to the game
Nithya began playing badminton in 2016 for fun. However, in 2019, she discovered para-sports and shifted her focus to competitive badminton. She started training under coach Gaurav Khanna in Lucknow. Gaurav, who is India’s national coach, is currently accompanying the Indian badminton team in Paris.
