The Paralympic Games in Paris came to a close on Sunday night. India had a historic performance in the Games, with a record haul of 29 medals. The closing ceremony on Sunday saw Harvinder Singh and Preethi Pal as flagbearers, as the Indian contingent, along with other nations, marched at Stade de France.
The flag bearers from the participating nations entered the arena. A total of 169 delegations took part in the Paralympics 2024, representing 168 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs).
To open the ceremony, French singer Santa performed Johnny Hallyday’s iconic song Vivre pour le Meilleur. She serenaded the crowd while video sequences highlighted some of the best moments of the games from the past.
“Nobody wants these Games to end,” said Tony Estanguet
IPC and Paralympic organising committee president Tony Estanguet was warmly received by the crowd. He passionately declared, “Nobody wants these games to end, but we can make this moment one to remember for the rest of our lives,” before calling for a huge ovation for the athletes, which the crowd enthusiastically delivered.
Tony Estanguet took a moment to express heartfelt appreciation for the volunteers, highlighting their crucial role in making the Paralympic Games a success.
Andrew Parsons declared the games closed.
President of the International Paralympic Committee, Andrew Parsons, declared the games closed. “Tonight, we must bring the record-breaking 2024 Summer Paralympics to a close. Paris 2024 has set a benchmark for all future Paralympic Games. You have staged the most spectacular Paralympic Games ever!” he said. Aurelie Aubert and Mathieu Bosredon extinguished the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympics flame.
The electronic music show
Jean-Michel Jarre, the pioneer of electronic music in France, lead a special performance at the heart of the stage. He was joined by 23 other artists, showcasing the diversity of French electronic music and adding a unifying touch to this grand celebration of the Games. More than 20 top French DJs performed at the closing ceremony.
Breakdancing at the Paralympics closing ceremony
Eight dancers, including some with disabilities, celebrated the diversity of breakdancing through solo and group performances during the closing ceremony. They performed in a spirit of demonstration and celebration, accompanied by Cut Killer’s music set.
