Vinesh Phogat’s wait for the Paris Olympics silver medal continues as the Court of Arbitration for Sports’ (CAS) verdict has been delayed again. The Indian wrestler, who was disqualified from the gold medal match after she was found 100 gm overweight on the day of her final bout, will have to wait until August 16 to know her fate.
Vinesh had appealed that she’d made the weight on the previous day as she beat 4-time World Champions and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Yui Susaki in the round of 16, Ukaraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarterfinal, and then easily Yusneylys Guzmán in the semifinal. Therefore, she should be at least awarded a silver medal.
Yet another delay in Vinesh Phogat’s verdict
After deliberating for six days, the CAS still hasn’t come to a decision. “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) extends till August 16 ( 6 pm-Paris time) the decision on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal to be awarded the joint silver medal in the women’s 50kg freestyle category,” the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) said in a statement.
This isn’t the first time the verdict has been delayed. When Vinesh filed the appeal on August 7, it was expected that the verdict would come the next day. However, that day was shifted to August 11, then 13 and now 16. However, instead of Vinesh’s lawyers or the IOA demanding time, it’s the CAS who requested more time to reach a conclusion.
