The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which has been rocked by the political unrest in the country, faces a new hurdle. BCB chief Nazmul Hassan, who is currently in London, has reportedly offered to quit and pave way for reforms to be made to the board. His offer comes months ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be hosted by Bangladesh.
Will Bangladesh be able to host Women’s T20 World Cup
As per Cricbuzz, a BCB director said that the board was in touch with the absconding chief. He added that Namul Hassan had offered to cooperate with the interim government and quit his position.
“One of our directors is in touch with him and according to him, Papon bhai (Nazmul Hassan) is ready to cooperate and is also prepared to quit from the President’s post to bring reform in the board,” a BCB official told Cricbuzz.
Multiple BCB officials have fled the country in the wake of fresh violence and an interim government taking over, making day-to-day functioning of the board practically impossible.
The BCB’s chief offer comes at a time when the ICC is considering moving the Women’s T20 World Cup to an alternate venue. The BCB has so far maintained that it has reached out to the interim government seeking security assurances to host the marquee event.
They have been adamant on retaining the hosting rights for the World Cup which is scheduled to take place in October. The country is also planning to reach out to the UN to help them in their cause.
Meanwhile, India has refused ICC’s request to host the T20 World Cup. The other alternatives the ICC has is Sri Lanka and UAE. It remains to be seen what situation unfolds in Bangladesh and if they can race against time to have arrangements in place to host the event.
