Another controversy has emerged in the ongoing India vs Sri Lanka series, this time over the IND vs SL 1st ODI ending in a tie. Chasing a stiff 231-run target, India failed to go past it but managed to level the score. However, unlike in the T20I series, there was no Super Over to decide the fate of the match. Now, a Sri Lanka Cricket Board official has claimed that while there was an option to use Super Over, it wasn’t used.
Why was Super Over not used in IND vs SL 1st ODI
As per Midday, a SLC official said that the Super Over was an option based on the ICC’s December 2023 ODI playing conditions. He added that the playing conditions were also mentioned in the MOUs signed by both BCCI and SLC.
The rules for the Super Over state that the result for a match that is tied has to be determined by a Super Over and that the game will end as a tie only if conditions don’t allow a Super Over to take place.
Meanwhile, as per The Morning Telegraph, an ICC member has said that the Super Over will be enforced if the IND vs SL 3rd ODI ends in a tie. India are on the verge of facing a series defeat and are in a do-or-die situation.
